#savethealligators is a performance that took place at the University of South Florida in three public locations across campus on October 13, 2016.
With this performance I address issues about the political rhetoric leading up to the 2016 presidential election, and how information is communicated, understood, and shared publicly and through social media.
This script is rife with the elements of manipulation that are utilized by politicians, pundits, and other talking heads during this particularly toxic election year. I appeal to the public to join me in an urgent cause that sounds both familiar and critical, but in reality is entirely irrelevant today. I advocate for this cause using pseudo facts, and incomplete, exaggerated, or misremembered information about the alligators and their habitat in the Everglades. My language is sententious and pedagogic, but also relatable. My overall mission is clear, but the specifics of my arguments contradict one another.
